Digitize your workout!

Everyone knows that we work out better and more enthusiastically when we’re working towards a goal that someone has set or we have set ourselves. Whether that goal is distance, time, speed, heart rate, terrain, or anything else, most people respond well to a challenge that they can quantify. “Run faster” or “run longer,” for most of us who are serious about fitness, isn’t really enough to spur that extra effort.

For serious runners, GPS running watches have become a really popular way of not only motivating, but keeping track of serious and ambitious work-outs. Distance markers and overall times provide acceptable overviews of how a run has gone. But for any serious runner, more detailed information can really be helpful to gauging your progress.

Using global positioning technology GPS running watches keep track of your precise location as your run progresses. The, the watch can use this information to not only plot out where you have gone and how far a distance that is, but also how fast you go through each leg of your run.

Let’s create an example. Let’s say your run begins on the street where you live, then you go through a local park, to a running trail along a beach, and back. By tracking not only your distance but your speed, you can calculate an average speed for the overall workout, but even more importantly, a speed for each different area that you pass.

This recorded information helps you get a much better sense of your strengths and weaknesses as a runner. It helps you see how fast you are when you are fastest, and how much you slow down when you do.
You can also determine why you slow down; are you distracted by other runners or traffic, or are you just getting lax? Perhaps you know you need to go easy, and you can see what that looks like.

GPS running watches also help you keep track, literally, of where you are. Particular models set digital markers of where your course progresses, so it’s easier to follow home.

This is helpful if you do trail running, or other running in an environment that is not so easy to backtrack. So no matter what type of goal you have set for yourself, a way of tracking it digitally can be extra helpful in keeping yourself on task.

The next thing to do is browse through the different models and choose the right one for you! Sporttek are providers of running watches.

How to Choose a Suitable Running Watch

Most people insist on a running watch having three basic functions; stopwatch (sometimes called chronograph), a memory feature and a countdown timer.

The stopwatch mode allows you to time your runs in hours, minutes and seconds, some even go to a fraction of a second. Most basic and cheaper models will use a single start/stop button and a lap button which allows you to pause the display but without stopping the stopwatch, allowing you to check your progress at any particular mark, be it a mile marker or on a lap of a circuit. The more advanced and more expensive running watches have a screen this is split into two, half shows your overall time and the other half shows the time of each marker or lap whenever you press the button.

The memory features allow you to store your lap’s times and analyze and check your progress later. Again, basic watches start with a 10 lap memory but this can go right up to a 300 lap memory. So, choosing a watch by how many sessions can be stored depends on how many laps you do in each session and how many sessions you want to be stored. On using the memory recall mode each session is shown usually showing the date and you can scroll through checking each lap. More technical (and expensive) watches will show the best lap time and give an average lap time.

A countdown timer is used for speed sessions. Watches vary in sophistication (and this also usually depends on the price of the watch). The basic (or ‘cheaper’) version lets you set a time and select whether you want the time to bleep and repeat itself at the end, bleep and stop or bleep and count upwards. This version involves a lot of button pushing and is not very flexible. A timer that will let you program different length sessions in the same cycle, i.e. repetitions, 5 minutes fast followed by 2 minutes slow is much better.

With so many different types of running watch available, getting the right kind of watch really depends on the kind of runner you are or what activity you will need it for. Some people say that a watch is not needed and running should be done for pleasure but the majority of runners, whether you run a mile in 15 minutes or strive for the 4 minute mile, like to keep any eye on their progress.

One of the most important and basic features of any sports watch is a memory function which allows you to record timings when training or lap times in speed sessions. Most running watches also have countdown timers. This feature is not essential but if your training involves repetitions (reps) this feature can help a great deal.

The more you spend on a running watch the more features it will have, some being more useful than others. But most models, whether you get a Timex running watch, Nike running watch, or a Suunto running watch are surprisingly easy to use, with icons on the screen telling you which mode you are in.
When choosing a watch don’t forget a few basic rules, is the screen readable at arms length? Can I activate the buttons easily whilst exercising? Or even, can I wear it in the shower when I come back from my run?

The best way to find a suitable sports watch is to browse. A site with many watches is Sporttek, they do sports watches and running watches.
