Making sure your paintings go the distance

For the artist and the art buyer the longevity of a painting is always key, and both hope their art will go the distance. Even the most meticulously executed paintings must cope with outside influences such as accidental damage, neglect or simply old age, however there is much that the artist can do by way of careful selection of materials and technique to add durability to the painting.

To start with use the best quality materials, canvas or linen should have a tight weave and ideally a weight of 10oz or more (particularly on larger pieces). (more…)

A frame can make or break the visual impact of a painting. Bear in mind though that a frame represents the junction between the work of art and the environment in which it hangs, and it must create either a clear visual barrier or an area of harmony, in order to bring the two together. This is one reason why gold has traditionally been used on picture frames; it’s brilliance is striking, yet at the same time, it also has the capacity to reflect surrounding colours and tones, so that, in theory, a gilt frame will fit into any location. When we take on a pet we take on the resposibility of looking after them and caring for them and over time they become an important part of our life. Over the years we collect so many of those photos of them doing all those things that make them so unique. At some point though we need more than just a happy snap that gets put into a drawer, never to be seen again. (more…)
