Designer Watches: Do We Really Want Them?
The world has recently witnessed the watch business become saturated with big-name designers and such labels as Emporio Armani, Dolce & Gabana, DKNY, Coach, and Burberry. With Designer Watches selling at amounts in the tens of thousand of dollars apiece, relatively less expensive watches are a welcome addition to the market, with designs offering exquisite high-quality watches for only a fraction of the price of their competitors.
And so it ever was: back in the 17th century, Luxury Watches were an accessory only woman of wealth could wear. Later on, in the 19th century, men also started carrying around pocket watches. These were very expensive so again they were usually worn only by those with a lot of money. It was not until after World War I that watches really became commonplace. During the war, the soldiers who happened to own a pocket watch found it cumbersome to have to go through their pockets just to check the time. However, many of them developed watches with wristbands as most of the men had been laborers from working-class families who could not afford any other kind of watch. In addition, the government needed a way for the soldiers to be synchronized for their missions. And so it was decided to issue everyone simple wristwatches. After the war, wristwatches became a common item for all, even for the lower-income people.
Over time, the wristwatch underwent many modifications. Throughout the course of the 20th century they were transformed from simple timepieces to being fashion accessories to almost being obsolete, only to once more become signs of luxury and wealth. With many top designers bringing people luxury watches the average person has many options to pick from when selecting a timepiece. Even in our modern world where smart-phones have taken over everything there is still a need for watches, as a watch can represent many different things, such as style, status quo, personality and even help you to be noticed by someone special
.
With the current economic recession we are now experiencing, people are naturally spending less and less money on status symbols. Even those who were not penny pinchers before are now holding onto their disposable income. Thus spending thousands of dollars on a single watch has become ludicrous once more! Upscale manufacturers and designers such as Versace, Vulcain, Oris, and Bertolucci are selling less and less due to their high prices. While these big names have paved the way for designer watches, it is the smaller designers in the market who now reign supreme. With such companies continuing to sell watches at astronomically high prices, one will obviously do much better with something that costs less but is equal in quality.
