Beginner BDSM: Flogging Safety
There are numerous styles of sex toys and BDSM gear out there from Fleshlights, the best male masturbator, to hands-free vibrators to cock rings to ball stretchers, every one has need for safe use, whips are no exception.
In practically all BDSM play and use of bondage gear there is some risk, which is nominal if the proper precautions are taken. Before trying any new BDSM activity or using any new piece of bondage gear make sure you read all the safety warnings and learn how to keep it safe. Flogging is no exception to this rule and should be treated with respect or somebody will get hurt.
The first term I would like to go over is “wrapping”. When you strike with your whip but you over extend you will make contact, not with the tips, but with the middle of the tail. When this happens the tips will “wrap” around the edge of the body part, gaining speed and striking with much greater force than intended. This could cause a lot of pain, break the skin or cause other damage. This is why practice is required if you’re new to flogging, practice on a pillow, both when the pillow is horizontal on a bed or couch and also practice flogging it after setting it up vertically, as if your sub was standing. Flogging isn’t as easy as the experienced BDSM masters make it seem, so for the safety of your sub, be sure to practice on your own before attempting any serious flogging.
After you have sufficiently practiced and have gained control of your whip or other flogging device you will need to learn what body parts are safe to strike, which aren’t and which are safe but with greater limitations.
I will start by going over the safest parts of the body to flog.
The buttocks: A very common place to strike and quite safe. As long as you keep your strikes around the central area of each cheek there is little chance for problems. There is ample protection here in the form of fat and no critical organs nearby that you need to be very concerned about. The buttocks are a great place to work if you are just beginning due to the safe aspect of the area. one thing to keep in mind is to avoid the hips, the hips are not well protected and you want to avoid bruising the hip itself, this can easily happen if you allow the tails of the whip to wrap.
The upper back: Another common place to flog is the upper back, there is usually little in the way of fat but there is a large amount of muscle here providing great protection. For some, parts of the lower body are a bit too sensitive and so the upper back is the preferred location for work. One big safety point for this area is to not use any floggers that are stiff such as paddles or canes. The spine and shoulder blades are delicate and can be damaged if struck by a stiff instrument.
The thighs: Many subs love receiving work on the thighs as they tend to be more sensitive than the buttocks or the upper back. Two notable areas to work on are the inner thighs and the crease between the buttocks and the upper thighs, also sometimes known as the “sweet spot”, due to the fact that they are highly sensitive areas. This area is also popular with other bondage gear and BDSM toys for many people. However due to the shape of the thighs they are prone to wrapping if your strikes are not on target and a wrap that ends on the inner thigh, which is already sensitive, can cause quite an uncomfortable amount of pain.
Here is a list of regions on the body that should never be struck with any type of flogger:
Spine
Lower back
Head
Neck
Feet (however the soles are sometimes used but be very careful as the bones there are fragile)
All joints, period.
Shoulders
Upper chest
Lower check
Abdomen
Tailbone
In addition there are also places on the body that are fine to strike as long as a great deal of care is taken. One such area are the breasts, many women love the use of bondage gear on their breasts and flogging can be just as fun. However, breasts are very somewhat delicate and should not be struck with force, due to their sensitivity light flogging will usually be sufficient.
Always use common sense and follow safe habits, listen to what experienced BDSM practitioners say and only work on a human being when you’ve sufficiantly practiced on inanimate objects.
