Retro Phones and funky hot water bottles – your ideal unusual gift
If, like me, you were looking for something slightly unusual as a gift this year, and wanted to avoid the endless trolleying around M&S, then I might well have saved you a considerable amount of shoe leather.
Whilst doing a routine online search for a buddha statue, I stumbled upon a site packed with products that called out to me to investigate further. My attention was first grabbed by the references to ‘ethical’ and ‘clear conscience shopping’. Great! It was refreshing to find a company who actually cared for where their products were being sourced from. A fully support the rights of those people grafting away for little in return.
The sound of the ‘old fashioned’ phones on a mobile immediately trasports me back to a bygone era of ‘black and white’. It brings to mind the word ‘phoney’, but I really like the way they sound. It creates a nostalgic feeling of warmth. The irony hasn’t escape me that so much interest in this comes from a generation weaned on digital and ‘high tech’.
Fashion, music and classic style icons have always inspired new generations who enjoy adding their own ’spin’ to retro subjects. The imagination of contemporary designers are often sparked by products, music and fashion influenced by bygone eras. Retro telephones are no exception to the rule. These items of style are a ‘must have’ for any fashion-conscious home.
One of my favourites is the Dreyfuss 500 black retro phone. It became one of the most commonly used phones in the US, after being introduced by Henry Dreyfuss in 1949. It makes use of a standard plug socket, and is available in chrome, white or black. To avoid creating a large hole in the wall, avoid walking from room to room and just stick with your bog-standard BT phone!
Other retro items that caught my attention were their hot water bottle range. You would rarely see these boring objects, manufactured in two or three colours, and only on a cold snap. But look at these funky styles, shapes and colours. Excellent sense of fun! Anyone in my family would love the range of designs on offer. I particularly like the Zebra style with its safari pattern, manufactured with recyclable material. Another great benefit is that a large chunk of the Christmas shopping headache has been wiped out.
