5 fish species beginners make the mistake of buying.
Below you will find info on fish species that beginners often buy but that are unsuitable for most beginners aquarists. These fish are for one reason or another not suitable for beginners, this can due to them being sensetive or that they grow to big for home aquariums. A few of the fish I mention in this article make great aquarium fish for more advanced aquarists but are not suited for beginners. Other species are not suitable pet fishperiod and should never be kept in aquariums.
Species 1: Oscar fish
This fish is usually sold while still very small, 1-2 inches. The small fish (fry) looks suitable for small aquariums and many beginners buy them. They are hardy and do not demand much from the aquarium keeper. The oscar only have one big drawback that prevents it from being a good beginner fish. They grow large and require a large tank. They grow to be more then a ft and require large aquariums to feel at home. I would recommend an aquarium that is atleast 150 gallon but other people would tell you that 75 gallon is enough. They are good beginner fish if you got an aquarium that is large enough.
Fish Species 2: Common pleco
This is another hardy species that is unsuitable for most beginners due to their large size. They require huge tanks and can grow to be over 2 ft.
Fish species 3: The bala shark (freshwater “shark”)
The bala sharkl prefers to be kept in large schools and should never be kept alone. They are active fish that grow very big, when you combine this with the fact that they should only be kept in shoals it is not hard to realise that this species never should be kept in private aquariums.
Fish species 4: Neon tetra
The neon tetra has many of the qualities you are looking for in a beginner fish, it is small and very beautiful. They can be hard to keep and they often die when kept by unexperinced aquarists. The Neon tetra is a fish that often is recommended to beginners despite the fact that they can be sensitive. They are a great choice for aquarium fish keepers that have kept fish for a year or two.
Species 5: The clown loach
The clown loachis a great looking fish but unsuitable for beginners for several reasons. One reason that they are not suitable for beginners are that they usually are wild caught and should therefore only be kept by people who knwos how to giev the a good home, if by anyone. Another reason is that the clown loach can be hard to care for and somewhat sensitive. Yet another reason is that they require large tanks once they become adults. They grow slowly but can reach a lenght of 1 ft.
This was just five of the many many species beginners should stay away from. Only a small fraction of all the fish in the world are suitable for beginners and you should therefor always research a species before buying it. Make sure to find out as much as possible about a species when you are researching it to avoid unpleasent suprises down the line. Internet is a great resource for researching fish and there are a lot of good fish websites around.
