Expected figure for repossessions has dropped
Perhaps the commitment to home ownship is one of the most important that could be made in any person’s life. To experience repossession must be the most stressful time of anyone’s life. Obviously, if you live beyond your means you only have yourself to blame if you are left behind by fluctuations in interest rates. But to lose your house as a result of a national recession, is clearly an unfortunate bi-product of decisions made elsewhere.
The figure was cut by a third yesterday for the number of people expected to be repossessed by their lenders. The expectation by the Council of Mortgage Lenders for 48,000 repossessions is attributed to low interest rates and government initiatives helped people who are struggling to retain their homes.
The repossession number is lower than the expected figure of around 75,000, but is still the highest number for fourteen years.
The latest forecast emerged as the CML released information showing the number of repossessions rose by 3% during the third quarter, despite the steady rise in the number of unemployed.
About 11,700 homes were taken over by lenders during the period that was up from 11,400 in the previous three months, but down on the first quarter’s total of 12,700.
There was also a fall in the number of people who fell behind with their mortgage repayments.
The number of owing at least two months mortgage payments was around 194,600.Accounting for 5% of their total mortgage, down from 204,200 recorded at the end of June.
The number of houses being built has fallen, creating a slow increase in the supply to those waiting. This means that changes in demand for houses will be influential in determining house prices. A small rise in demand will cause a significant rise in price.
