Oak Park parks and recreation
The park district in Oak Park is one of the best in the country, after almost 100 years it is still well taken care of. It is amazing that one city can offer over 80 acres of parks and still have room for several entertainment options. Recreation choices include an ice skating rink, dog park, a conservatory and an outdoor pool.
People have been enjoying the botanical gardens in Oark Park since the late 1920’s. THere have been many updates to the main gardens over the years. With several thousand plants and over 2000 sqf, this is one of Oak Park’s top destinations. There are many different plants in the collection including rare cacti.. Some of the plants in the area traced back to the original crop from the Greenhouse in the early parts of the twentieth century, making for true history in action.
Several high quality orchids are also on site. Starting in 2005, the conservatory has been on the National Register for Historic Places. The conservatory welcomes over 10,000 visitors per year. World wide visitors come to the conservatory to see the flower and plant exhibits. All of the services are accessible to residents and guests alike. Knowledgable guides and well written literature help make it one of the top park departments in the nation.
The Park District hosts thousands of programs each year across its many venues, including the famous Cheney Mansion and Pleasant Home, two well kept historical Oak Park homes. The history is apparent from the moment you walk into either home. The Parks department actively works to preserve and restore the original character of the city through a variety of means, including preservation of cultural and historic institutions. Maintaining the original character of early city culture, the historically preserved mansions provide an ideal destination for educational visits.
The department hosts events on a regular basis and often visits the local schools. The many parks, resources and educational opportunities make Oak Park a top destination for nature lovers from all over. You can enjoy a day with your family through the many areas, including ice skating in the winter, athletic exhibits throughout the year as well as natural exhibits at the Conservatory. Enjoy a serene weekend in the natural wonders that Oak Park has to offer guided by its leading Parks and Recreation department.
