Batteries Manufactured Of Paper And Coffee-grounds
Portable power is everywhere. Nowadays most people use laptops or and notebooks in their everyday life. To my mind everyone will have to purchase a battery for his or her portable device one day. The industry of Laptop Computer Batteries and laptops develops rapidly. It is even difficult to imagine their wide variety. Modern advanced technologies help scientists to discover and examine new alternative means of power supply.
Batteries made of Coffee-grounds
It sounds quite unusual but Sony company is somewhat connected with professional fortune-tellers. The reason is that Sony uses coffee-grounds as an initial material while producing electrodes for lithium-ionic batteries. The coffee-grounds question was aroused not without a reason. In Japan, for example, up to 300 000 of traditionally office wastes are coffee-grounds which should be utilized every year. In 1996 engineers of Sony Company obtained the substance with high carbon levels, which was ideal for lithium-ionic batteries’ cathodes production.
Sony did not stop and the company went ahead. In order to avoid additional fuel expense for coffee-grounds heating and moisture removal, Sony experts proposed to use biological enzymes. Bacteria which were placed into coffee-grounds heated the substance up to 70C in the process of their vital functions. Only after that the water-free material was processed for industry needs. Though cathodes that are produced in such a technology do not help with utilization of wastes , they make it possible to cut the final price of lithium-ionic batteries up to 2 -10%.
Batteries made of Paper
According to “Nature†report, specialists of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have created a paper battery with the help of modern nanotechnologies. Cellulose is a basis of new material. Carbon nanotubes are built-in into the cellulose. There was a problem with cellulose material some years ago. This material could not be dissolved in the number of existing solvents. Nevertheless, the experts managed to select the proper ionic liquid, dissolve the cellulose and include the carbon nanotubes into the material. When the ionic liquid was removed, the paper layer was generated. The paper layer was bent and rolled. After these actions it took its original form. The scientists say that if this layer is covered with the layer of lithium, the paper bending battery can be produced.
On condition that the ionic liquid is not removed from the paper, the material will serve as a supercondencer. The tests reveal that nanopaper keeeps its properties even in temperatures which exceed the room temperature; it is not deformed while freezing and thawing. In spite of the fact that nanopaper is much less powerful when comparing with ordinary lithium batteries, the experts believe that such batteries will be commercially profitable in years.
