What is Our Addiction With Black Gadgets
This may sound like an odd question to ask, why are we so addicted to black gadgets, it does make me wonder. Most people these days will know that we are a world of gadget lovers. Whether your favourite gadget is an iPod, a mobile phone or a netbook. We all have a small selection of gadgets that come with us everywhere we go and we can’t live without.
However, when it comes to choosing which gadgets to buy, why are we always drawn to the same colour, black.
The question came to me while I was reading a post about the new black Nintendo Wii, which is released in the beginning of November. Nintendo said that with the release of their black edition console, they expect to see a sales boost. However, why would they assume that they will get a sales boost simply because they release their console in a new colour. It’s not like their competitors are dominating the market because they have black consoles. As a matter of fact, Nintendo have actually sold more Wii’s than their competitor consoles, and the Wii is white.
The question about gadget colour can be asked in a number of electronic markets. The mobile phone market is just one example. When the recent iPhone was released, the all black version sold out before the version with a white back. Pretty much every phone on the market is either available in black or only comes in black, just look at the shelves.
The Television market is another sector that this question applies to. Less than 10 years ago, you could buy a new TV in almost any colour, with silver and black being the most popular, you could even buy blue or pink if you really wanted to. However, now you will struggle to find a TV that’s any colour but black.
These days, pretty much all gadgets are available in black, from digital photo frames to binary clocks. It’s difficult to see why we are so drawn to black gadgets. Although the black colour hides dirt, it does show dust more. Plus, if you were to scratch a black gadget, you can see the damage much more than say a silver gadget.
For those of you who are not huge black gadget fans, for the time being, you can still get some other colours. Although this might change soon, for the time being you can still get yourself an flying lantern without the only available colour being black. As for the question of black gadgets, I have no idea, maybe someone else has a better idea?
