Changing Broadband Providers – The Easy Way
Okay so you already have Broadband Internet so why change providers?
If you’ve had your Broadband internet connection for quite a while, by switching providers you could increase your Broadband speed as well as saving money. The price you were basically for a 256kb/s connection a year ago could cost the same price as a 1mb/s connection now!
If you’re coming up to the end of your contract or if you’ve been with the same broadband provider for over 12 months then the chances are you can move to another supplier at zero cost.
The main reasons you would change providers to increase the speed you’re currently getting, as well as hopefully reducing monthly costs. Some Broadband companies also give free extra services such as free wireless routers.
A word of warning though. If you go and cancel your current broadband package and then pay for a new contract, you’ll have no internet for a few days at least. You wouldn’t do this with a mobile phone after all would you?
However Switching Broadband providers is a simple process, as the majority of the main Broadband providers have signed up to a code of practice which is designed to make the process of changing Broadband suppliers as easy as possible.
Switch providers is very similar to switching mobile phone providers – Where numbers are ported between companies, so there isn’t downtime. With Broadband you are given a code that your new Broadband provider will use to transfer you swiftly. This code is known as the MAC code. Once the MAC code has been transferred between your old Broadband provider and your new provider, then your Broadband service should transfer over without any interruption.
If you are going to switch providers, you don’t need to cancel your current plan. Allow your new provider to do the work for you using the MAC number, this should then result in the automatic termination of your existing provider. (Note: Although this process is ‘Automatic’ we’d advise checking to ensure that your existing service is terminated. You should note that if you change your suppliers before your current contract has ended, you may be liable for the outstanding charges).
Lastly if you do decide to move providers your existing Broadband supplier may try to entice you with a free upgrade / reduced cost in order to keep your business which may simplify your decision.
