Who Wants to Travel for Next to Nothing?
Without doubt, electrically powered cars were the hot topic at last month’s Frankfurt show. But we are still unlikely to see our streets dominated by near silent electric cars for some time.
The only vehicle that is close to hitting the mainstream is the Mitsubishi MIEV supermini, first road-tested some 18 months ago. A Government study is about to commence in which 25 motorists will evaluate the MIEV for daily use on UK roads.
The Mitsubishi MIEV feasibility test was massively over subscribed with 3,000 drivers applying to take part. There has been so much interest that Mitsubishi have ordered another 500 cars for 2010.
Both Peugeot and Citroen have signed agreements to sell the electric motors with their badges.
One of the most outstanding and appealing features of the MIEV supermini is economy. It costs only about 96p to fully charge the battery (about $1.60), taking about 6 hours to do so. A fully charged battery will let you travel a little less than 100 miles, under ideal conditions. This makes the MIEV capable of an incredible 12,000 miles for about £115 ($183).
Another feature of the MIEV that often draws comment is how it travels silently. This has been raised as a road safety concern by some groups including advocates for the blind, children, pedestrians and the elderly.
If you have never encountered an electric car before you’d be excused for expecting the performance and speed of a golf buggy. But the MIEV is capable of a top speed of 87mph, easily fast enough for any of Britains roads. But travelling at speed will quickly deplete the battery.
The future for motoring certainly looks electric. With new advances in battery technology taking place almost daily it is likely that within a few short years our roads will begin to fill with near silent electricity powered cars, plugging in to lampposts to refuel on cheap electrical power.
