Simple Ways to Pimp Your Scalextric
Racing Scalextric cars is growing in popularity as each new generation discovers the fun and excitement of slot car racing. Scalextric and slot car hobbyists soon start to look for ways to get the most speed from their systems. Here I will outline a few simple techniques that you can use to make your Scalextric cars literally fly around the track.
The same principles apply to slot cars as well as F1 racing cars and rally cars. To get more speed you can install a more powerful engine, optimise the tires and lower the weight. Optimising Scalextric cars can be very educational.
Let’s first think about the Scalextric cars engine. Your Scalextrci cars don’t use petrol engines, they use little electric motors that are very easy to swap out. There are some high performance Scalextric motors that will give you some significant speed enhancements. Upgrading your cars motor will give you an immediate improvement in speed.
But increased speed can mean that your car will tend to fly off the track when it encounters a bend. Your car is held on the track using a magnet. Many modern cars come fitted with these magnets but you might like to upgrade to a stronger magnet to help your car stick to the track.
Another simple improvement is to fit a new set of tires. Improving grip will help your car to attain greater speeds.
So your Scalextric car is fully pimped and ready to break the world land speed record. But what about your Scalextric track? A few simple tweaks can make all the difference. I recommend that you first try this enhancements on one of your two lanes so that you can compare the difference with the unmodified track.
Start by cleaning the Scalextric track. Any dirt, dust or grease on the track will lower friction and result in poor performance. The next thing to do is thoroughly clean your slot. The slots in your Scalextric track will inevitably become clogged with dust and dirt. This will inevitable impede the movement of your car. Keeping your slots clean will make a lot of difference.
Finish up by ensuring that all electrical connections in your system are as good as they can be. Clean all the electrical connectors, the slotted track and the contacts on your car.
By now your car should be breaking speed limits as it whizzes aroung the track. Time to challenge someone to a race.
