How to Build your Own MAME Cabinet
The video games at the arcades where an unique way to enjoy games and one stood in front of an arcade cabinet with arcade controls as well as the arcade monitors quality display and backlit coin chutes. It was a fun way to socialize with friends, while trying to impress others with your skills. I’m sure lots of you have heard of classics such as Track and Field and Pole Position. In the mid 90’s all these arcade classics have disappeared and today becoming rare to spot a playable cabinet. The majority of people today use PC’s for their gaming.
The other side, is that many old arcade games are still playable on our PC’s. To play them we can use the MAME emulator, it stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator that’s not only available for computers but also consoles. Because the roms are extracted from the arcades motherboards its gameplay is near 100% emulated. Its hard to tell the difference. Its almost a guarantee that your favorite games are also playable, today there are thousands of different roms. So you see, even with the arcade machines abandoned, we can still enjoy our favorite games. You too. Playing the old games is great but its not as authentic compared to the real arcades.
By playing on a MAME cabinet the feel can be an identical experience. A MAME cabinet is similar to a real arcade machine and users include the same features such as artwork and t-molding inspired from real cabinets. Most users rarely use mouse or keyboard on their MAME cabinet or as little as possible. Because of this we have a large variety of available Frontends, it lets us use and control all areas of emulation via the arcade controls. Frontends makes it possible to have other emulators installed like Spectrum or Nintendo games. You could even install a Jukebox for your MAME cabinet, the possibilities are many. Its a lot of work building a MAME cabinet. You could try you’re luck and find an old Arcade machine to build on, maybe recycle the parts as well.
As for finding arcade parts there are several places to buy them if you were to build a cabinet. Just search on the net. As for the display you can use a PC monitor, still better would be to use graphic cards s-video connection connected to a television. If you are living in the USA, Wells Gardner makes arcade monitors and they have superb quality. They are perfect for the many arcade gamers who dont want to use TV’s and PC monitors as displays. As arcade displays operates at 15khz and all graphic cards outputs 30khz signals. This setup will not work so with arcade displays you’ll need an Arcade VGA card. This card outputs the native resolutions at 15khz and should work with any display.
The end result is the same. MAME has given us the thrill to play the many video arcade games.
