Bronchitis is a respiratory disease. It is an inflammation of bronchial tubes, or air passages, accompanied by cough, hacking cough, wheeze and sputum.
There are 2 main types of bronchitis: acute & chronic. Acute Bronchitis is a common disease which generally protracts for a short period and is induced by influenza, the common cold, or an microbiosis. So, this type of bronchitis is extremely infectious and is inherited through cough, sneezing & simply by touching things which have been touched by a sick person.
The other type of the disease is chronic bronchitis. It protracts for longer period if compared with acute bronchitis. Its common symptoms are similar to those of acute bronchitic: cough and wheeze. Yet, its causes differ significantly. Chronic bronchitis is usually induced by smoking, second hand smoke, a virus and others. In fact, it is not contagious. But it does not mean that the disease is less acute.
Despite the different causes, the two types have much in common. Both of them are not susceptible to antibiotics. A virus causes bronchitis, & virus infections do not react to the germ-killing properties of antibiotics. They are effective against bacterial infections (for instance strep throat & bladder infections). Antibiotics can also cause complications, for instance diarrhea & yeast infections. Moreover, they can undermine your immune system. Hence, antibiotics may cause more harm than good if they are not used in the right way.
Whatever type of bronchitis you have, it starts with hacking cough & gradually turns into sputum accompanied by fever, headaches and fatigue.
As long as you have the conditions, your acute bronchitis is believed to be infectious. It you have had this disease for more than 6 months, you should have an appointment with your GP to check for other diseases.
The spread of bronchitis can be avoided. A sick person should observe a healthy hygiene by regularly washing hands & covering the mouth when coughing and sneezing.
The best treatment for bronchitis is herbal remedies. They will not damage your health as antibiotics can do & aim at the root causes. Herbal medicines are efficacious against both acute & chronic bronchitis.
Take all the necessary preventative measures to avoid the illness. Any disease is better to avoid than to cure.
